About

Serendipity is one of those lovely words we love to hear and say. It just rolls right off our tongue in a marvelous way.

Over the many (56) years of my life, I’ve learned that we can recognize Serendipity when it happens. We don’t need a special talent, or even an aptitude (as the dictionary says) – we just need to keep our eyes open and notice it when it appears.

serendipity: an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.

Living in Serendipity is the act of noticing the wondrous life we’ve been given, the talents and the gifts. Using those to bless others, to surprise them, and yes, it makes us feel good too!

I thought this was a rather interesting historical tidbit on the word ‘serendipity’ –

… coined by Horace Walpole (1717-92) in a letter to Horace Mann (dated Jan. 28); he said he formed it from the Persian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serendip,” whose heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of.”

So who am I? I am the serendipitous Karen Saari. I live in the Northern California mountains with my husband and his (our) daughter. I have three children and two stepchildren, all of them grown up except this last one.  I hope to introduce serendipity into her life. I have scads of grandchildren, all of them dear to my heart.

I’ve written some books (link at the end), I’m attending college online at the Southern New Hampshire University working towards my BA in Creative Writing with a minor in Graphic Design. For most of my life I’ve been a stay-at-home Mom. I’m very experienced in how to run a household. It doesn’t matter what you do with your life, you have to live somewhere and someone in that abode should know the ins and outs of its operating system. It’s not a gender issue, it’s a life issue.

I learned to sew when I was 9 yrs old and have been making my own clothes ever since. In the 90s I decided to try my hand at quilt designing and I was moderately successful at that.   If you decide to find anything I’ve done look for Karen Gass. I published a quilt book, was in many magazines and right now I’m the Editor of The Quilt Pattern Magazine.

I’ve done polymer clay, made jewelry and mixed media. I knit and crochet – right now (March 2015) I’m totally on a knitting kick.

I love to yard sale, thrift shop, go to auctions and find little junk stores. Treasures are waiting to be found! I’ll be covering all of this and probably more here at Living in Serendipity!
